Okinawa, located in the southwestern islands of Japan, is made up of 72 islands which stretch for 374 miles. Okinawa is the main island in the Ryukyu Archipelago and its name means "sea rope" as the island chain resemble rope floating on the ocean. Okinawa is 485 square miles in size, 67 miles long and varies from 2 to 18 miles wide. It's population is approximately 1.3 million, primarily Japanese. Tokyo is located 970 miles northeast.
